Steering Committee & Volunteer Team Leader
1. When was the last time you tried something new? What was it?
If it weren't already obvious, I have never been in a fight, but I always had an interest in self-defense. So this past year I joined 2Knuckle Sports MMA and have been learning to box. It’s a humbling and awesome sport and I think everyone should try it out.
2. What activities make you lose track of time?
I often find myself lost in time when I am gardening or tending to my aquariums.
3. If you were to teach someone one thing, what would you teach?
Well, turns out I'm always teaching something as I have a 2-year-old son. Right now there is a specific thing I am teaching him...how to use the toilet like a big boy.
4. What do we all have in common, besides our genes, that makes us human?
What I find amazing about 'us humans' is our desire to create, to make things better. Its the driving force behind almost everything that we do. This manifests for me in a number of ways; at home I'm always trying to pack more produce into my garden spaces and I've made it a goal to raise small endangered fresh water fish (right now, Puente Pino Suarez). I also love to bring new things into volunteering when I am able. Volunteerism isn't a new thing and there is always something people can do to contribute, so thinking outside the box and making events fun and fresh is important for keeping people engaged. Recently in Guadalupe we decided to have a DJ, BBQ, and balloon fight after the event; unexpected and totally fun.
5. If you were forced to eliminate every physical possession from your life with the exception of what could fit into a single backpack, what would you put in it?
Most everything I own, I can replace. But, I would want to keep the memories, so my Mac Mini would come along, it has all of the photos and videos I've taken over the past 5 years and a lot has happened in my life in that time. Then again, I could just upload all that stuff to Dropbox. I do have quite a large backpack, so the PS4 would come along as well; maybe some socks and underwear…
I suppose if it really came down to what I can fit in my backpack, it wouldn't matter. What means the most to me in life can't fit into a bag.
6. What is your favorite sound?
Sometimes I forget just how loud all the A/C units and cars going by can be at times so when I get the chance to listen, I love the sound of untouched/unoccupied wilderness. Even when there is no sound, but I'm out camping or backpacking; it’s a unique silence, something you never forget.
