Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA 2012)

Valley of the Sun United Way is looking for Volunteer Income Tax Preparers to support Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites in the West Valley. The Valley of the Sun United Way West Valley Financial Empowerment Coalition is a partnership between VSUW and community partners (nonprofits, community colleges, municipalities and financial institutions in the West Valley). Volunteers will assist individuals and families in preparing their taxes for free, claiming benefits for which they are eligible, and being connected to financial education and asset building opportunities.
VITA Site Job Descriptions:
TAX PREPARER
This individual is responsible for providing free tax preparation services to low/moderate income tax payers during the tax season (late January – April 14) at a VITA location.
- Complete and be certified in the IRS tax law and tax software training
- Prepare basic 1040 and 1040-EZ returns and related schedules
- Ensure all allowable tax credits for which a taxpayer is eligible are claimed
- Answer tax related questions
SITE SCREENER
This individual interviews taxpayers to determine eligibility and the level of assistance needed if qualified.
- Complete and be certified in the IRS tax law and tax software training
- Ensure that taxpayers have the necessary information and documentation to complete a tax return, including picture IDs for taxpayer and spouse and social security cards for everyone who will be claimed on the tax return
- Mark intake sheet with appropriate level of tax return preparation
SITE GREETER
This individual is responsible for greeting and performing the initial screening of all taxpayers.
Complete Greeter/Screener training
Welcome taxpayers to site and sign them in
Provide taxpayers with intake and survey forms to complete
Monitor site traffic to ensure all taxpayers checking in receive assistance
