Healthy Communities

Keeping our neighborhoods safe

Making sure Maricopa County residents and their families are safe helps to ensure the wellness of our community - from financial stability to personal safety.

How We Help

Working with our volunteers and partner agencies, we’re helping to keep our neighborhoods safe so individuals and families can thrive.

Adopt-a-Pool-Fence Program

Every year in Maricopa County, young children wander into unfenced areas with pools and drown. Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death among children in Arizona; since the year 2000, an average of 19 children per year have lost their lives in Maricopa County to drowning.

In an effort to prevent more tragedies, Valley of the Sun United Way partners with the United Phoenix Fire Fighters Association and have partnered on the Adopt-a-Pool-Fence Program, which provides families with one solution to protect their children – a donated pool fence.

Smoke Alarm Walks

Each year more than 4,000 Americans die and 20,000 and are injured in fires, many of which could be prevented. A working smoke alarm reduces the risk of death from a residential home fire by at least 50 percent.

Valley of the Sun United Way partners with First Things First to perform periodic Smoke Alarm Walks to help keep residents of all ages safe from deadly fire.
