Ending Hunger
Feeding Arizona's Hungry Families
More than 260,000 Arizona residents do not have the resources they need to acquire food for the next three days – and 80,000 people skip meals and/or lack adequate food quantity on a regular basis.
Hunger looms as a major problem for Maricopa County’s most vulnerable residents. But Valley of the Sun United Way is taking great strides toward ending hunger in our community by:
- Offsetting demands for food by leveraging resources to the area food-bank network
- Increasing outreach efforts to enroll individuals in food assistance programs
Our Goals for 2012
- Decrease the gap between the demand for food assistance and the supply of food available by 30 percent
- Increase the percentage of eligible individuals who participate in food assistance programs
Our Vision for 2020
By strengthening programs that provide and improve access to food, Valley of the Sun United Way helps ensure that Maricopa County residents have access to sufficient and nutritious food to meet their daily needs. Our goal is to reduce the number of individuals and families experiencing food insecurity by 33%, from 12% of the population to 8%, by 2020.
