Tocqueville Society
Become a Pillar in the Heritage of Giving.
Transform your commitment to community service into a powerful mechanism for change with the Tocqueville Society, named for 19th century French philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville, who held a deep admiration for the voluntary spirit of advancing the common good, a spirit he observed during a visit to America and enthusiastically documented in his writing.
The Tocqueville Society consists of individuals who have rendered outstanding voluntary service in their communities and contribute annual gifts of $10,000 and above. Last year in the Phoenix area, over 400 members collectively raised more than $6 million to improve the lives of local individuals and families.
Founded by United Way of America in 1972, there are now nearly 400 local United Way Tocqueville Societies across the country, each standing as a strong symbol of support for initiatives and programs that improve lives while building stronger, healthier and more vibrant communities.
You can join the Tocqueville Society at a variety of levels that include national recognition, as well as social, networking, community and business-related activities:

Step Up to the Tocqueville Society
If you’re committed to following your passion for philanthropy, the Tocqueville Society Step-Up Program is for you. By participating in this three-year tiered pledge program, you’ll be recognized as a member of the Tocqueville Society upon enrollment, which includes invitations to all social events and programs.
As a Tocqueville member, you’ll not only enjoy the social aspects of giving, but also the ability to empower those around you and play a larger philanthropic role in our community.
As a Step-Up Program member, at least 50% of your investment is directed to Results That Matter, our Community Fund. Through our all-volunteer oversight investment process, Results That Matter is the best way to do the most good. This is how the Step Up program works:
- Year One Pledge - $6,000; minimum of $3,000 invested in Results That Matter
- Year Two Pledge - $8,000; minimum of $4,000 invested in Results That Matter
- Year Three Pledge - $10,000; minimum of $5,000 invested in Results That Matter
