VITA Volunteers

Help Your Community and Learn a Valuable Skill.

Volunteers are needed for the upcoming tax season.

No prior tax experience required and FREE training is provided.

Valley of the Sun United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is focused on connecting every qualified Maricopa County taxpayer to a tax credit that could transform their lives. Volunteers prepare and e-file tax returns for hard working families and individual taxpayers to receive the maximum benefits available saving them hundreds of dollars in paid preparer fees. VITA volunteers do meaningful work in the fight against poverty.

United Way needs volunteers to support VITA sites in the West Valley during the tax season (January to April 15). Volunteers assist individuals and families in preparing their tax returns, claiming benefits for which they are eligible. Volunteers also connect taxpayers to other community resources and asset building opportunities. Services are provided free of charge.

Volunteer Commitment

Volunteers are asked to commit a minimum of 25 hours during the upcoming tax season, at any of our locations in the West Valley. The list of sites will be updated in January.

Volunteer Training

All volunteer tax preparers must be IRS Certified. Certification courses are held days, evenings, and/or weekends and is offered in December, and January. They are held at several locations around the Valley.

  •     Courses are typically 24 hours total, with the certification test taken online during the last class.
  •     Volunteers receive a tax certificate upon successful completion of training.
  •     A copy of the tax certificate must be shared with the site coordinator.
  •     Link and Learn e-learning, a self-paced training program on the IRS website, is also available for online certification.
