WHAT: On Saturday, May 16 volunteers and local firefighters from the Northwest Valley Firefighters Association will travel door-to-door throughout an area within the oldest neighborhood development in Surprise seeking qualified applicants to receive a donated pool fence. The walk is part of the Adopt-a-Pool-Fence program operated by The United Phoenix Fire Fighters Association and Valley of the Sun United Way. This marks the first Adopt-a-Pool-Fence Walk in the City of Surprise. As many as 30 families may receive a free pool fence.

HOW: To qualify for the program, families who do not have a pool fence must demonstrate financial need and meet the following criteria: a child six years of age or younger must be living in the home; the home must be owner-occupied; may qualify for a free pool fence through the program. Special circumstances will be considered. Interested people may also visit www.saverkids.org or call 602-631-4843 for program details.

The Adopt-a-Pool-Fence Program was created by the United Phoenix Fire Fighters Association in 2003 to prevent child drownings in Maricopa County.   The Adopt-a-Pool Fence program aims to provide families in need with a protective barrier to keep their children safe.  As part of Valley of the Sun United Way’s commitment to improve the health and safety of neighborhoods, it has partnered to expand the program across the Valley. Since the inception of the program, more than 400 pool fences have been donated to families in need throughout Maricopa County.
